Hello all. New member here. Joined to share info I thought could be helpful.
My sister-in-law bought a used 2013 V6 AWD Sorento several years ago and I've been repairing things on it as needed. It has always smoked pretty bad on startup, she was constantly topping off the oil. I (incorrectly) assumed it was valve seals and recommended running it as long as it runs OK. Valve seals would be a relatively large job.
Well she came over saying she thinks it needs new plugs (which it might) cause it would idle rough. I checked the codes and came up with a couple throttle body codes, one whose resolution was to clean it. So I took the throttle body off and noticed a rather large puddle of oil just behind the throttle body inside the intake. The oil was laying just below where the hose from the PCV connects to the intake. That's just plain crazy. After cleaning it up and putting it back together it was obvious (to me) that there was way to much suction on the PCV hose...the intake was madly sucking oil vapors from the engine and the oil would settle out in the intake and eventually flow into the combustion chamber (this is my observation).
My solution was to install a catch can on PCV hose and vent it to the atmosphere (I didn't want the intake to continue sucking oil from the crankcase and depositing it in the catch can). I capped of the fitting on the intake that the PCV hose was connected to. 3 weeks and no smoking and no oil in the catch can (no engine blow-by). Very inexpensive and easy to do fix (under $30).
If you have oil consumption and smoking on startup, look inside the intake behind the throttle body and see if you also have an oil puddle.
