Bought this vehicle from Carmax in 2018 w/ about 40k miles. Love the vehicle outside of a few issues.
One day this "brake light switch" situation struck me out of nowhere & I was stuck along w/ my mom & sister. Pulled out owners manual & found where it said to remove a cap by the gear shift and to place my smart key in slot. I did this & it did allow the gear shift to move into desired gear. It worked but I'd have to keep my smart key in that slot whenever the car is to be moved/driven.
Called Kia & they directed me to the local Kia dealer for repair. Kia repaired the issue & I stopped at a nearby grocery store. When I returned to the vehicle the same issue had returned. Called Kia & scheduled another appointment. Needless to say the same issue returned later that day. Called Kia for the 3rd time on this issue & they told me that my issue was escalated to a higher service level & they will contact me with instructions. They never contacted me at all.
I stopped using my smartkey and discovered that a lottery pencil stuck into that slot worked just the same. The 2nd & 3rd time I went to have it repaired; the lottery pencil was in the slot. I later tried to make an appointment with Kia to again remedy the issue but they informed me that my warranty had expired and that I'll have to pay diagnostic & service charges and start the process all over again. I never persued the issue again and here in 2024 I still rely on my little lottery pencil to do Kia's job.
Apparently they had changed the switch each time but something was causing it to fault.
Any suggestions?
